Training

Our training philosophy here at Storm Creek centers on excellent horsemanship. We avoid the term "Natural Horsemanship" because of the broad spectrum of trainers and "horse whisperers" that use the phrase to include all sorts of things that we do not practice. You can not love and pet and cuddle a horse into being trained. In the same respect, using force and pain and negative reinforcement does not result in a well trained horse either.

With patience, consistentcy, knowledge, and guidance, we achieve a level of horsemanship that is beneficial to the horse for the duration of its life. We strive to provide the horse with the tools necessary to become a productive, safe, and willing partner. Everything that we do is building a foundation for the horse to rely upon when faced with new situations, riders, or tasks.

We pay special attention to the details including, but not limited to: leading at the shoulder on a loose lead, stand when groomed/mounted/dismounted/tacked/untacked, pick up and hold all four feet for farrier, load in a trailer, stand tied, lunge with simple voice commands, and respectful ground manners. We are able to have most horses riding well in thirty days and can customize an individual training plan for whatever discipline your horse will be used for.

We're not miracle workers, and no, we most likely can't have a rodeo bronc giving pony rides in thirty days. However, we take a lot of pride in our work and in our horses. We train them in the safest, most effective way possible and that is with patience, time, and gentle discipline. We DO NOT use whips, spurs, drugs, squeeze chutes, or anything else to train using painful stimuli.

We are proud to say that we gentle break all horses and we have excellent references from people that have actually been here and have seen the way we do things. We have repeat customers that come to us time and time again because they like our methods, customer service, and the level of care given to their horse.

$500/30 days training and board. We require half down and the remainder before the horse goes home.

Corrective Training

We offer a corrective training program that directly focuses on not only the current issue but sets up a solid foundation to avoid future problems as well. Storm Creek can correct both behavioral and psychological concerns through patient, consistent, and knowledgeable training.

We do reccomend that a verterinary evaulation be done to rule out a physical matter (hormones, underlying injury, teeth, alignment, etc.) before beginning any training program.

It is rare to find a horse with a true psychological issue that doesn't stem from interaction with humans in some way. Most "problem" horses are man made. Unwanted behavior can be a result of abuse or neglect, a traumatic injury, or simple mishandling. Many of those types of issues can be addressed within a few weeks; however, depending on the issue the training can take more or less time. Rehabilitating horses after an accident or trauma often takes a few months.

What's done is done. There is no changing what happened in the past to cause your horse to behave the way it does. However, bad behavior does not have to continue into you and your horse's future. Habits can be changed; horses can be repaired. We don't simply stop the behaviors - we change the horse's way of reacting and thinking.

Pricing is done on an individualized basis. If you send us an email at stormcreekhorseco@yahoo and describe your issue we can give you an estimate.

Assisted Training

It has come to our attention that many people would love to have their horse spend time with a trainer but would prefer to be able to be in on the process. We have decided to offer Assisted Training for those of you that would like to learn about the training process, want to train your horse yourself with step by step instruction, or would like to bond with your horse and learn at the same time.

We have also decided to be very flexible in this process. We can take your horse for thirty days training and include you in the lessons once a week at no extra charge (extra lessons are $10.00/hour). You can bring your horse here for one hour sessions and we will work with both of you for $20.00/hour. You can board your horse here and take Assisted Training Lessons for $15.00/hour.
